I decided to tackle the wicked problem of personal finance. The result was Bean Counter.The Bean Counter mobile app features a grumpy bean who acts as your personal accountant. He answers the simple question "can I buy this?" by checking the balance of a predetermined bank account to see if there's any money left.

The community garden is just one part of a larger environmental justice effort for the communities in western Savannah, Georgia, and as a result, we worked with other non-profit organizations to integrate their vision and goals into the project.By the end of our 10 week session with Woodville community leaders and residents, we developed a roadmap that defined roles, membership stages and artifacts for the garden.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318678/woodville_web_pitch.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318678/woodville_web_pitch_o.png" data-mid="14071298" border="0" align="left"/>
The Challenge, ContinuedSavannah has a city law that requires residents to maintain their lawns on a regular basis. Residents that don't comply are forced to pay the city a fee to maintain the lawn for them. Many residents in Woodville are retired, older, and have inherited several different plots of land in the neighborhood. As a result, it's difficult for them to maintain all their properties, and many residents have had to pay the hefty city fine. The Woodville Community Organization had a plan in place to ease the expense and energy of maintaing a lawn for Woodville's aging population. Over the next few years, the WCO would offer to maintain the property of Woodville residents, and in exchange residents would agree to allow their property to be transformed into a community garden plot. Over time, a large network of community gardens would emerge. The gardens would be branded "Woodville Produce Community Gardens", and the produce could be sold under an umbrella brand of "Woodville Produce". The proceeds would go towards the neighborhood's afterschool programs and continuing education projects. Critical to this plan would be a large volunteer force, capable of maintaining the large network of garden plots. My service design class was asked to develop the volunteer program for Woodville Produce.

We developed several co-design activities to help residents envision their ideal garden experience, and to test our assumptions about what a community garden should look and feel like.
Resident's Community Garden JourneyMy class identified four phases a resident would go through while they participated in the community garden. We divided into smaller groups to develop the phases of the gardening experience.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318678/woodville_isometric_journey_2.png" width="612" height="468" width_o="612" height_o="468" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318678/woodville_isometric_journey_2_o.png" data-mid="14072303" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318678/woodville_isometric_supporting_materials.png" width="612" height="157" width_o="612" height_o="157" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318678/woodville_isometric_supporting_materials_o.png" data-mid="14072403" border="0" align="left"/>
Supporting MaterialsOver the next two weeks, we worked with residents to create artifacts to sketch different garden experiences. We sketched fixtures, environments, seating arrangements, and fundraising opportunities with the residents of Woodville, incorporating their ideas into our final deliverables. For the use phase, my team developed branded fixtures that would distinguish the community garden plots from the personal gardens in the neighborhood. This included benches with material sourced from reclaimed materials through the Emergent Structures program, sandwich boards that doubled as a presentation board, and garden signs.

Together, we developed soft goods that could be sold during fundraisers and fixtures that could help distinguish community garden plots from private ones.

The ConceptFrisbee, Anyone? is a site that makes it easy to find a pick-up frisbee game near you, or to post a new one. It does this by gathering twitter posts with the hashtag #frisbeeanyone and posting them to the Frisbee Anyone website. It makes it easy to respond to a game request from the site by creating a pre-written message when the player clicks the "I'm In" link.

I wanted a way to amplify their efforts and give anyone living in the area the ability to join their ad hoc sessions.
"Sleep Mode"The site is inactive from 10pm to 4am to encourage safe frisbee games. During this time, the site displays a night theme and the game board is turned off.

Notable FeaturesCertain mechanics were put into place to encourage timely response and participation. Using Twitter as a platform allows Frisbee Anyone visitors to explore other player profiles easily before meeting up with them.

The ChallengeSavannah is host to many nonprofits and exciting initiatives. I discovered that if there wasn't a member of the staff that was interested in art or design, most organizations simply did without art or design direction. Despite the presence of a large art and design school in the area, many organizations didn't approach the school for help. The challenge was to find a way to fill this need. I worked with Nate Kirscher to create the program experience, word of mouth marketing campaign, online presence.The result was the Do Good Work program. Students need professional experience and nonprofits need creative skills. Do Good Work brings them together for their mutual benefit. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_header_sm.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_header_sm_o.png" data-mid="6610291" border="0" align="left"/>

Formative ResearchWe interviewed over 20 different research participants about their experience volunteering in Savannah or doing pro-bono design work. As part of the interview, we asked participants to complete three different research activities . The activities were designed to prompt participants to think about different elements of their experience and to encourage more insightful answers.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_formativeresearch.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_formativeresearch_o.png" data-mid="6607957" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_researchactivities.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_researchactivities_o.png" data-mid="6613529" border="0" align="left"/>

Participant QuotesWe noticed some sentiments that were repeated frequently in our interviews. Nonprofits and students were interested in working with each other but had issues finding and connecting to one another. Some of these issues were because of bad past experiences, others were because there was a lack of trust.

Research InsightsWe discovered that there wasn't an obvious and painless way to connect for organizations to connect to students in Savannah. Most attempts ended in failure for a variety of reasons.The one path that seemed successful was connecting to students through a trusted moderator, normally a professor. This insight drove most of the development of our service.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_orgstudent_sma.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_orgstudent_sma_o.png" data-mid="6610215" border="0" align="left"/>

Concept DevelopmentWe drafted storyboards, service models while we explored different forms this service could take. Initially we believed Do Good Work could be a student consultancy made up of a 3-5 students each quarter. As we explored this solution, we learned the demand from nonprofits and the lifestyles of students required more flexibility.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_customercanvas.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_customercanvas_o.png" data-mid="6515493" border="0" align="left"/>

Co-CreationWe asked nonprofits and students to help us create resources that would help nonprofits and students create project-based volunteering opportunities. Our collaboration resulted in project planning worksheets that prompted people to discuss uncomfortable issues like budgets, compensation, and schedules.

Print MarketingWe had two different focuses for our print campaign. We created postcards that could be left at strategic locations (like the career services office) that marketed a single project we had developed with an organization. Our flyers broadcasted our more general mission to students.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_printermarketing.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_printermarketing_o.png" data-mid="6515764" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_printmedia_2.png" width="600" height="400" width_o="600" height_o="400" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_printmedia_2_o.png" data-mid="6549511" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_printmarketing_3.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_printmarketing_3_o.png" data-mid="6612088" border="0" align="left"/>

Web MarketingI designed and helped develop the first version of the Do Good Work website. The simple single page website was a quick way to prototype our concept to students and organizations.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_gen1.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_gen1_o.png" data-mid="6607857" border="0" align="left"/>
People to People Marketing Along with our passive marketing attempts, we engaged the student population proactively by giving lectures on the importance of skill-based volunteering in classrooms and by attending SCAD's career fair.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_careerfair.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_careerfair_o.png" data-mid="6611331" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_careerfair2.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_careerfair2_o.png" data-mid="6612090" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_lecture.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_lecture_o.png" data-mid="6611096" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_lecture_2.png" width="600" height="420" width_o="600" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/1318741/dgw_web_lecture_2_o.png" data-mid="6611094" border="0" align="left"/>

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/ultraroll_web_header.png" width="670" height="464" width_o="800" height_o="555" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/ultraroll_web_header_o.png" data-mid="6202124" border="0" align="left"/>
Film hobby cameras have experienced a revival because they make taking fun, artsy and ethereal photographs easy. The hobby has become very popular despite the cost of maintaining it.

The hobby camera culture encourages spontaneous, unplanned, "shot from the hip" styles of photography. This style of photography is difficult to imitate with current digital cameras. I thought there was a way to combine the experience of using a hobby camera with the advantages that a digital camera has.

User Interviews
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/sarah1.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/sarah1_o.jpg" data-mid="1724702" border="0" align="left"/>
I interviewed fans of hobby and toy photography to discover what attracts them to their hobby. Along with the interview, I asked them to show me their camera collections and to talk about their personal history and experience with photography.

During my discussions with toy and hobby camera enthusiasts, I learned that they were motivated by the thrill of experimentation. The hobbyist culture is supportive and encourages members to make mistakes and create new effects. There is a strong, healthy community of hobbyists on sites like Flickr that is eager to share knowledge and help its members learn.

Fans like the freedom the medium gives them. I heard things like "I don't have to worry about taking "good" photographs." and "I can just have fun and be goofy with my friends.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/otis_camerainfograph.png" width="670" height="332" width_o="700" height_o="347" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/otis_camerainfograph_o.png" data-mid="4989351" border="0" align="left"/>
I learned that hobbyists often had a large collection of cameras, ranging from expensive professional cameras, to cheap toys cameras with low quality lenses. Photographers valued having different photo taking experiences and experimenting with different devices. The more casual the camera-taking experience, the less removed the photographer wanted to be from the event.
Co-Design

To help me understand people's relationship with point and shoot cameras, I asked random participants to help me co-design improvements to my current digital point and shoot. I transcribed the camera's interface into a paper version, and asked participants to complete tasks using the paper interface. After completing the tasks, I asked participants to make design suggestions and make changes to the paper camera's interface.

During my co-design session I saw a trend of participants expressing surprise at the capabilities of a point and shoot camera. It was revelaed that participants were unaware of the many interesting capabiilties of their own point and shoots. I heard sentiments like "If this wasn't so hard to get to, I'd use the feature more often" and "I wish I had known my camera could do that, sooner".
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/IMG_0019.JPG" width="670" height="502" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/IMG_0019_o.JPG" data-mid="4989418" border="0" align="left"/>
Participants reacted to the physical controls of my point and shoot camera, especially the dial. The current mode, all the available modes and how to set them are all obvious and immediately accessible to the user. The direct physical relationship also made using the camera intuitive.

Sketches
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/otis_concept_sketch_700px.png" width="670" height="512" width_o="700" height_o="535" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/otis_concept_sketch_700px_o.png" data-mid="4989593" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/otis_screen_concept_sketch_700px.png" width="670" height="487" width_o="700" height_o="509" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/otis_screen_concept_sketch_700px_o.png" data-mid="4989596" border="0" align="left"/>
I started sketching concepts based on these findings. My goals for both the interface and the physical form were to make it a different photo taking experience for the camera enthusiast.
The Ultraroll camera concept is styled in the tradition of a twin reflex camera, meaning the LCD screen sits on top of the camera. This means photographers can inconspicuously frame, set, and take the photo from the same stance. Like ninja.
Ultraroll Concept Camera
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/otis_front.jpg" width="670" height="376" width_o="1280" height_o="720" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/otis_front_o.jpg" data-mid="4989652" border="0" align="left"/>
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/otis_screensketch.png" width="670" height="524" width_o="1500" height_o="1174" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/385387/otis_screensketch_o.png" data-mid="1724692" border="0" align="left"/>
The Ultraroll Camera concept uses physical dials to control the camera’s settings. This allows for quick and memorable access to features and functions. All the camera's features are on the top level of display, so that nothing is buried. It encourages photographers to explore what their camera can do.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/387513/wave_web_header.png" width="670" height="308" width_o="800" height_o="368" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/387513/wave_web_header_o.png" data-mid="5929251" border="0" align="left"/>
Wave is a content management concept for browsers. It helps people organize their web pages in their browser by taking advantage of the natural tendency to separate and sort content into meaningful groups.

I worked with Danielle Kanastab and Alex Mattice to create a submission for Mozilla Labs 2009 Summer Challenge. The premise was that tabs were a "broken metaphor" for content management in a browser. We were challenged to create a better way to understand web content. We received Best in Class for Interaction and Honorary Mention for Execution.

My team's first instinct was to see if tabs were really a broken metaphor. We surveyed a random sampling of people to see how they used tabs. What we learned was that tabs work for most people because they rarely exceed more than two or three tabs during their browser session. There were a handful of people that were unsatisfied with the tabs. We quickly identified them as power or lead users.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/387513/wave_leaduserprofile.png" width="670" height="310" width_o="1575" height_o="731" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/387513/wave_leaduserprofile_o.png" data-mid="1710867" border="0" align="left"/>
Based on the initial survey, I determined some of the common attributes of a lead user.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/387513/IMG_5853.JPG" width="670" height="446" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/387513/IMG_5853_o.JPG" data-mid="1710869" border="0" align="left"/>
For the next phase of research, I recruited lead users to interview and shadow. I observed them during a typical browsing session and asked to see how they managed their content on their hard drive. During the interview, users talked about their browsing habits and what they valued in a web browser.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/387513/wave_leaduserhabits.png" width="670" height="490" width_o="1575" height_o="1154" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/387513/wave_leaduserhabits_o.png" data-mid="1710866" border="0" align="left"/>
Lead users had the tendency to organize content between two browser windows. At the start of a browsing session, users would open 2-3 windows. One window was used like a "to-do" list. The content that was loaded into it were things like online banking and classwork related sites like blackboard. Another one was a "passive" window that had streaming media sites like pandora.com or hulu.com. The final one was their "active" window. After completing their "to-do" list, they would spend the majority of their browser session in this window, with their passive window floating in the background.

The understanding that all content was not equal and the realization that lead users were progressively treating web content like applications helped guide our final design.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/387513/wave_leaduservalues.png" width="670" height="281" width_o="1542" height_o="648" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/32294/387513/wave_leaduservalues_o.png" data-mid="1710868" border="0" align="left"/>
Throughout all the conversations I had with lead users about what they valued in a browser, I saw four reoccurring themes emerge: Customization, Tidiness, Performance, and Readiness. The value that was the most important was readiness. "I want my content to be there when I need it, and to get out of my way when I don't." This became my team's design principle that would guide the final design.

Our concepts concentrated on an effective way to help users create ad hoc organization schemes in a single window. We were inspired by the immersive experience that add-ons like CoolIris provided. Eventually, our concept was stripped down to a more utilitarian concept.
